Karthi, Surya’s bro has finally made his appearance on the screen and that too with a bang … a big bang indeed. After assisting Maniratnam in Aayutha Ezhuthu, Karthi ventured into the acting arena, unlike Surya he has proved himself as a worthy actor in his very first movie, Paruthiveeran.
Paruthiveeran is all about violence and gore, but Karthi and Priyamani excel in the movie as actors. Paruthiveeran has been a perfect launchpad for Karthi who has made the best use of it. In a lot of scenes, Karthi reminds the audience about Surya, the way Karthi walks, smiles, delivers dialogues its all so much like Surya. Surya and Karthi ought to make a movie together, but Studio Green please stay away.

Speaking about Paruthiveeran, although the movie has been able to showcase the actor’s talent, the movie as a whole is not worth a watch. The movie is in the lines of Virumaandi but Virumaandi was much much better inspite of all the blood and flesh lying all over the screen. Virumaandi might have been inspired by a Japanese flick but it surely did ring the bells in the audience. At the end, Virumaandi did not leave the audience with a heavy heart which Paruthiveeran does. When the audience walk out after the movie, they expect to be happy and smiling and not feel sorry for the lead actors who die in the movie. When i came out of the movie i was empathizing with the actors, which is the success of the director Ameer, but the movie as a whole is disappointing.
Karthi as a village thug has done his best to the role and Priyamani is no less competitive, except for her voice everything seems to be good about her. Saravanan who comes has Karthi’s uncle is the best choice. Comedy is situational and mostly in the hands of Karthi and Saravanan.
Another actor has arrived in our industry, waiting to make it in the leagues of Rajnikanth and Kamalhassan. Lets see who wins …

my english teacher saw this movie and told me she couldn’t sleep for the next two days.
@ suraksha
true … priyamani is killed in such brutal way …
but whats the point in watching a movie if its a burden at the end of the day … thats why i say the movie is a disappointment …
Some movies are meant to be heavy. Why? For people to realize the magnitude of the problem. For instance “The Ninth Day” - a German movie on the concentration camp during the world war. There you don’t have a good ending. But it still is the fav. movie for critics, because it carries the message. You don’t expect the movie to have a hero who would go beat up Hitler and set free the Jews from the CC.
I am not comparing Paruthiveeran with the ninth day. So please don’t start discussions calculated to lead to personal abuse. I am merely pointing to the fact that “whats the point in watching a movie if its a burden at the end of the day” is not necessarily true.
Wait a min. you are the film fest man! And am sure you guys are screening some Bergman too… In which case here is a better argument: How many Bergman movies have a good ending?
a bergman’s movie might not have a good or cool ending … but its a really good movie, the storyline is excellent and the way the plot unfolds is really really unexpected … these are quality films made for audience with taste …
there are movies with heavy subjects … the movie ‘life is beautiful’ by roberto benigni, speaks about people taken into concentration camps and killed brutally, but the way benigni takes the movie, the way he tries to keep the spirits of his little son high is simply awesome … the ending is disappointing where the small boy becomes an orphan … a rather sad ending … but there was so much good about the movie, so much into a father son relationship, the subject was woven smoothly around this … at the end people got to know about the cruelty at the concentration camp and where also not burdened by the story … infact its a feel good movie inspite of having some ruthless and sad scenes …
as you say, a movie can be used to educate people about the magnitude of a problem but why should it leave the audience burdened
One word: Dali. All Dali films burden people in the end. And they are great movies.
Okay here is why certain movies shouldn’t have good endings:
1) If they are talking about a huge problem, for instance an Al Gore movie on “Global warming”. It is not to educate people, but to fix the terror in their mind forever so that they will try to reduce pollution.
Lets take an analogy over here. The Singapore govt. imposed fines and 50 whipes in the ass for the guy who litters in public. Yes, not a happy decision but a terrorizing one. Indians stopped polluting Singapore. More than habit it was terror which was engraved in their mind. When the same Indians came to India, they littered. The reason here is terrorizing works wonders.
Why? Cauze the human brain is designed to forget good things quickly and remember bad things for a long time.
A movie with a stong message is not supposed to leave you light hearted, it is supposed to burden you. It is supposed to tell you, if you dont stop polluting now, someday the nature is gonna gobble you up and no superman is gonna come to save you…
The line is fiction and factual. Even the concentration camp stuff, shouldn’t have been a happy ending, cauze it never was happy in Germany after the end of Hitler.
After the end of Hitler, Stalin of Russia said this “I am going to take a rod heat it up and shove it in German’s ass and heat the other end so that no one pulls it out” And he did it. Till this day only east German is doing good, west Germany is fucked up.
People still suffering big time due to war and genetic mutation due to poison gas… you expect a happy ending for this? Well lemme tell you this ain’t no tamil cinema, It is life. And in life its not all good.
The purpose of the movie is not to highlight the good parts in the concentration camp, but to highlight how human’s have been reckless.
2) Its not about taste. It is not about flow of scenes. It is not about story line. Most Bergmen movies dont have story line or plot. For instance the movie “Thro’ the glass darkly” is about how a girl is going mad everyday and her dad is writing a novel about she going mad.
What its all about is: Hitting the people hard. Sometimes we rich kids think life is one helluva ride. We at times need a dose of truth to bring us back to earth. We sometimes need to be hit hard with truth and thats what these movies do. It just tells us life ain’t that good. People dying of starvation in uganda and we having cheese berger.
The raw deal: 180 million people die of starvation every year and 650 million people suffer from obesity every year… that my friend proves god bastard doesn’t exists… there is no happy ending for this…

ah got that twice… damn… delete one if possible
i dont have much to say about this movie and i wont jump into conclusion without me watching the movie. But this is a good write up dude.

// A movie with a stong message is not supposed to leave you light hearted, it is supposed to burden you //
why ? if i watch a movie i get into the movie, if the director is so damn experienced, he’ll make the audience empathise with the actors … but when the movie is over, audience are supposed to come out of this …
a movie like you said which speaks about a social cause or plight is not supposed to end good … absolutely right, that too if the problem still persists …
but this all started over paruthiveeran … give it a watch (i usually dont recommend this movie) and then speak about the burden … what is there in the movie to be burdened about … why are people disappointed after watching it …
paruthiveeran is definitely not in the classic cinema or parallel cinema list … it was supposed to be a commercial entertainer but turned to be a drastic disappointer …
movies needn’t necessarily have an happy ending but then why should it leave the people disappointed … when a movie speaks about a social cause, it should turn the audience into rebels and make them fight, not get them disappointed or send them back home disappointed … if the movie is about hitler or stalin’s atrocities, audience should be made to go against hitler or stalin instead of feeling disappointed over a german’ ass
@ anand
but you even loved the movie deepavali and saw yourself in the place of jeyam ravi … u asked people to call you as billu after watching the movie … but again watch this da …
and thanks da machan … btw i checked out your wordpress blog too
//a movie like you said which speaks about a social cause or plight is not supposed to end good … absolutely right, that too if the problem still persists …
There you have agreed to my point. I never bickered about partuthiveeran, I was merely pointing out the fact that movies need not end in a happy way.
//if the movie is about hitler or stalin’s atrocities, audience should be made to go against hitler or stalin instead of feeling disappointed over a german’ ass
The movie is not about Hitler or Stalin, the movie is about mankind and how at times we forget it. Thought you would get it
@ sagaro
//a movie like you said which speaks about a social cause or plight is not supposed to end good … absolutely right, that too if the problem still persists …//
i stand by the above lines but i still say movies should not be disappointing or a burden at the end … the ending not being good is entiely different
//the movie is not about Hitler or Stalin, the movie is about mankind and how at times we forget it//
and then what happens ? people will feel for mankind but then whats the point … in a movie like the legend of bhagat singh, the protagonist dies, he is hanged … as an audience i would prefer to rebel against the britishers (if they were still ruling us) instead of weeping for bhagat singh day in and day out …
exactly … thanks for proving my point…
I liked the movie. Even my friend did. For the sole fact that, when you lead a life like that, when the central character shows no intention of working, or leads a very irresponsible life.. it takes u no where. And a negative ending seems to be appropriate here. Imagine showing a positive one and giving ideas to the young generations that you can get away with everything..
Anyway, what I reaallly liked about the movie, was all the kezhavi’s. Too cute. And some really nice frames..
@ incognito
who said the protagonist has no intention in life … he was repeatedly telling his uncle that he should get arrested and put in the madras jail … LoL …
the guy has not much of an aim in life nor is interested in life … the movie rightly gave the apt ending … but dont you think the movie is a disappointing … especially the songs
I did not expect much from the movie to be disappointed I guess. I liked the way she starts singing with kezhavi’s, but ya after sometime it was konjam disappointing. But then again..not much.
@ incognito
well with all the crowd outside the theatres and all black tickets selling like the lassi in triplicane i did have hopes …
plus the movie used no lights except for the climax and illaiyaraja had sung a song … but music was also a let down, it wasnt the usual yuvan shankar raja touch …
but karthi was amazing as an actor … he is far ahead than surya
hi mates
This movie is not up to the marks but this movie reminds me of those [g]olden days in which barathiraja was in his prime. But any how this movie fails miserably to give a punch that a folktale should actually give. But the characterisations are awesome!
Regarding the music, remember that Yuvan is trying to be original and different this time. In this movie we don’t find him guilty of stealing foreign music. But at the end of the day the “above mistakes” are above the masses. Thats why the movie is running successfully and the soundtracks are selling hot. Regarding Karthi, he is the latest jackpot horse in kodambakkam race course. Any how this movie is worth watching once , or twice if you have guts to watch the end. I take leave by putting forward that characterisations fuel this movie’s successful running.
@ capjack
the movie can be very well compared to the likes of barathiraja …
true, the movie has some really good artists who have done their best … especially karthi and priyamani, karthi is absolutely awesome in his next movie with selvaraghavan …
and yuvan ! your comment is very true, check out itwofs . com and you can find a hundred rip offs from english tracks by our composers … btw sent a mail to your yahoo id regd a film festival
