Ajith has made the best use of Kireedam to bail out his sinking career. The movie has all ingredients for the total family but is definitely not a family entertainer. Ajith is in his best and has not raised his voice all over the movie or messed with the modulation. Infact Ajith has underplayed in this movie.

Somehow not many people like Trisha but I still go ga-ga when I see her. Trisha has made her presence felt in all her scenes. The song Akkam pakkam has Trisha at her best. But more than Ajith and Trisha it is Raj Kiran who succeeds as an actor in this movie. Raj Kiran was apt in anger as well as in tears.
Vijay has made an impressive debut as a director. Being a film institute product and with the experience of making ad films and being Priyadarshan’s assistant, Vijay has done his role to near perfection. Infact Kireedam is more of a Vijay film rather than an Ajith film. where Vijay has woven a thread perfectly around Ajith and all the actors. When it comes to choosing the cast and crew Vijay is at his best. Apt. But screenplay is something Vijay should have put more time into. At some point of time the thread refuses to weave itself around the script.
G.V.Prakash has scored the music for the movie and two songs are definite toppers, the Ajith-Raj Kiran song Kanavellam and the Ajith-Trisha duet Akkam pakka. I am no Ajith fan but I am upset with the opening song. No mass. But in a way that is good, keeping an actor out of this mass image will do wonders to their career. But the opening song is racy enough for Ajith and so are the other songs which have been appropriate.
Sitting behind the camera, Thiru has captured the movie in some brilliant lights. Songs are completely Thiru’s forte. He rocks. And Antony with the scissors has made some brilliant cuts especially in the scene where Trisha’s heart takes over her mind. The Thiru Antony duo have recreated the Vettaiyadu Villaiyadu bike matt scene and this time they are nearly flawless. Infact the sepia tone imposed makes the keying splendid.
Not to forget Vivek, Santhanam and Sathyan. They all are associated with Ajith in som point of time and keep the audience in splits. Vivek has some really gross comedy this time. Kireedam is definitely worth a watch. Thala has shown an impressive performance. But in a nutshell – first half super, second half mokka …I believe re editing will work wonders for this movie like it did for sillunu oru kadhal. Its a shit long movie man. 3 hours.

here is the link to the 1989 movie, but i suggest you go watch it … http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0237376/
dinesh,
/*keeping an actor out of this mass image will do wonders to their career*/
these words are really true for ajith.. he wud ve become a gr8 actor if he too had not stuck in the mass image..
Hi Dinesh
Though Ajit has acted well, I am not satisfied with the way in which the plot lumbers in the second half. The movie begins like a commercial movie, but after a while it travels down like an art movie failing to satisfy the fans of both genres. Though it appears that ajit has underplayed, once again he has over acted. For instance he shouts in the middle of the crowd, after swashbuckling a group of people “Naan rowdy illlha”. But as you said,in a few other scenes Ajit’s acting is good, but I feel he lacks the charisma. Speaking about Rajkiran, he should stop hamming and try to do something new. He has been doing the same kind of roles after Paandavar boomi. In this movie his character has a sonnet of flaws. When I watched a few scenes of the original Greedom, I was able to find a lot of loopholes. But AL Vijay would have tried to batter the story better. Though there’s nothing wrong with the story, the screen play is very weak, particularly after when Ajit’s family moves to Kodikkarai. Also the ending is not very appropriate for an Ajit movie. Though the “mass hero image ” factor you made comes here, there are certain expectations Ajit has to fulfill. In the second half the movie hobbles for a long time and adding to that a sad song helps it further. I could see a lot of people walking out during the second half. The technical aspects are extremely well along with the music. By the way enlighten me about the “Vettaiyadu Villaiyadu bike matt scene” and “keying”.
@ sam
exactly … vijay and ajith are caught in the mass image in early stage of their career but kamal and rajini were actors and only after 100+ movies they caem into mass and demi god status … vijay and ajith really have to come out of this …
@ capjack
the story getting lost in the second half is very true … the screenplay has gone haywire … but the director could have set it right by answering a few questions that comes in audience’s mind …
i still think ajith was at his best … i am no ajith fan but i still liked the fish market scene … i pity the sakthivel character there who is caught in a rowdy status which he never wished to …
along with the weight loss he seems to have lost the charisma as well … the ajith who comes in police’s dress in the opening looked like a kid in a fancy dress competition …
in the partha mudhal naale song in vettaiyadu villaiyadu, kamal and kamalinee drive a bullet … it was not shot on a road but in a closed locale with a single colored backdrop, the road was shot alone and both mixed later … which looked very obvious on screen … kireedam too has a similar scene but its close to perfection …
Hi Dinesh
Even I loved the Sakthivel character, his characterisation is good, but his actions in the second half which were supposed to produce sympathy, exhibits his foolishness. Thats why the tragic effect at the end fails.
Thanks for the information…….
@ cap jack
you cant say he is foolish though … its just that he doesnt think twice … but cant expect more … btw i havent seen the malayalam version … you have any idea about that ?
Hi Dinesh
I didnt see the whole movie but I have seen a few clippings of that movie long ago. It was better than this one. It was damn serious and didnt have commercial elements like this one. AL.Vijay has added a hell lot of commercial elements and tried to end it like an art film. The original movie was taken in 1989 and at that time that script was pretty original. But today many movies have evolved out of the original script. For instance Dhil was one of the commercial avatars of the Mallu Kireedom.
I am saying that he is foolish because, in this commercial but so called “art” movie ,Sakthivel{ the same Sakthivel who is portrayed as an steady and intellectual person earlier} would have once again sent him to the hospital by leaving him with a fractured hand and leg for a span of 6 months and moved his family to a safer place and entered the department. Also the case which may be filed against Sakthivel by Varadhan wont be of much effect, having the local inspector by his side. And his father could once again be easily convinced by the inspector. Though this is deviating from the original script, a commercially begun movie should end commercially. But still If the director wanted to produce a tragic effect, he would have ended the story by showing SI Sakthivel who is meloncholically saying “My father never spoke to me after that!”. But if we do this the father son relationship receives a smudge, but this is far better than the present ending where the father’s dream is torn off breaking their relationship permanently. Anyhow in my supposed ending there is a point of hope still, leaving it a typical tragic short story effect. If the director strongly wanted to have the original story, he should have portrayed Sakthivel as a totally different person. In better words it is the foolishness of the director who dictates the character,Sakthivel.
@ capjack
what i liked in your observation is the movie having a lot of commercial ingredients and ending like an art film … true …
and when i saw the trailer, it did remind me of dhil …
and remaking a yesteryear movie has this prob, a lot of unauthorized remakes happen over the period of time …
but for a normal movie goer the movie is one time worth watch …
